🇬🇧 What is Zero Article?

In English, we use three articles: a, an, and the. But in many situations, we use no article at all — this is called the Zero Article (marked as ×).

For example: × Dogs are loyal. (NOT “The dogs are loyal” — we mean dogs in general.) Understanding when NOT to use an article is just as important as knowing when to use one.

తెలుగులో Articles (a, an, the) అనే పదాలు లేవు! అందుకే Telugu medium విద్యార్థులకు రెండు రకాల సమస్యలు వస్తాయి:

1️⃣ తప్పుగా Article వేయడం: “The dogs are loyal” — “the” అక్కర్లేదు!

2️⃣ Article పెట్టకపోవడం: “I saw film” — “a film” అనాలి!

Zero Article అంటే — ఆ వాక్యంలో a/an/the ఏదీ వాడకూడదు అని అర్థం. ఈ notes లో × గుర్తు = “ఇక్కడ article వద్దు” అని అర్థం.

9 Rules for Zero Article

Article వాడని 9 నియమాలు — వివరంగా చదవండి

1 Plural nouns — general

× Dogs are loyal animals.

× Birds fly south in winter.

Plural noun వాడి సాధారణ విషయం చెప్తే — ఏ article వద్దు. “The dogs” అంటే నిర్దిష్ట కుక్కలు అవుతాయి!

2 Uncountable nouns — general

× Water is essential for life.

× Rice is a staple food in India.

నీరు, బియ్యం, తేనె, వెలుతురు — ఇవి లెక్కించలేనివి. సాధారణంగా మాట్లాడేటప్పుడు article వద్దు.

3 Names of people

× Ravi is a good student.

× Suma won the prize.

వ్యక్తుల పేర్ల ముందు a/an/the వాడకూడదు. (Exception: “A Mr. Sharma called” — తెలీని వ్యక్తి)

4 Countries & cities

× I live in India.

× She visited Hyderabad.

చాలా దేశాలు, నగరాల పేర్ల ముందు article వద్దు. కానీ the USA, the UK — exception! (Rule 4 చూడండి)

5 Names of languages

× She speaks Telugu and Hindi.

× I am learning English.

భాషల పేర్లు (Telugu, Hindi, French, Tamil) ముందు article వాడకూడదు.

6 School subjects

× He studies Mathematics.

× I like Science and History.

Maths, Science, English, Social Studies — సబ్జెక్టు పేర్ల ముందు article వాడకూడదు.

7 Names of meals

× We had dinner at 8 PM.

× Breakfast is important.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch — భోజన వేళల పేర్ల ముందు article వద్దు. “Have lunch”, “skip breakfast” — article లేదు.

8 Sports & games

× She plays cricket.

× He loves chess and football.

Cricket, football, chess, kabaddi — ఆటల పేర్ల ముందు article వద్దు. “Play the cricket” తప్పు!

9 Days & months (general)

× School reopens in June.

× We rest on Sunday.

నెలల పేర్లు (January…December) మరియు వారాల పేర్లు (Monday…Sunday) — సాధారణంగా article వద్దు.

Tricky Exceptions — When “the” IS used

ఇక్కడ “the” వాడాలి — జాగ్రత్తగా చదవండి!

⚠️ Exception 1 — Countries with Plural / Collective Names

✅ Use “the”

the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, the Philippines, the UAE

× No article

India, Japan, France, Brazil, Australia, Germany

Countries with plural names (the United States, the United Kingdom, the Philippines) or describing a group of islands or states use “the”. Most single-name countries don’t. USA, UK — ఇవి “United” తో కూడిన పేర్లు లేదా islands/states సమూహాలు — కాబట్టి “the” తో వాడాలి. India, Japan, France వంటివి single-name దేశాలు — “the” వద్దు.

⚠️ Exception 2 — Mountain Ranges vs Single Mountains

✅ Use “the” — mountain ranges

the Himalayas, the Alps, the Andes, the Rockies

× No article — single mountains

Mount Everest, Mount Fuji, Mount Kailash

A mountain range (a group of mountains) takes “the” because it is a collective. A single named mountain uses no article. పర్వత శ్రేణులు (Himalayas — చాలా పర్వతాలు) → “the” వాడాలి. ఒక్కో పర్వతం (Everest, Fuji) → “the” వద్దు.

⚠️ Exception 3 — Rivers vs Lakes

✅ Use “the” — rivers

the Ganga, the Nile, the Amazon, the Krishna

× No article — lakes

Lake Superior, Lake Victoria, Chilika Lake, Hussain Sagar

Rivers always take “the” (they are named flows). Lakes generally don’t take “the” — especially when “Lake” appears before or after the name. నదులకు ఎల్లప్పుడూ “the” వాడాలి — the Ganga, the Krishna, the Godavari. సరస్సులకు (Lakes) “the” వద్దు — Lake Victoria, Hussain Sagar.

⚠️ Exception 4 — Oceans & Seas vs Continents

✅ Use “the” — oceans & seas

the Indian Ocean, the Pacific, the Arabian Sea

× No article — continents

Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia, Antarctica

Oceans and seas always take “the”. Continents never take an article. సముద్రాలకు (Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea) “the” వాడాలి. ఖండాలకు (Asia, Africa, Europe) “the” వద్దు!

Common Errors by Telugu Students

తెలుగు విద్యార్థులు చేసే తప్పులు

❌ Error 1 — Adding “the” before sports & subjects

❌ She plays the cricket.
❌ I like the Maths.

✅ She plays × cricket.
✅ I like × Maths.

Sports and school subjects never take “the”. Telugu students add “the” because Telugu uses similar emphasis patterns that feel like they need an article. తెలుగులో “the cricket” అని ఎక్కడా అనం — కానీ English లో కూడా అనకూడదు. Sports, Subjects ముందు article వద్దు!

❌ Error 2 — Adding “the” before languages & country names

❌ She speaks the Telugu.
❌ I live in the India.

✅ She speaks × Telugu.
✅ I live in × India.

Language names and most country names never take an article. The exception is plural/collective country names (the USA, the UK). భాషలు (Telugu, Hindi) మరియు చాలా దేశాలు (India, Japan) — వీటి ముందు article వాడకూడదు. “the India” అనడం తప్పు!

❌ Error 3 — Using “the” for all rivers AND lakes equally

❌ I swam in the Hussain Sagar.
❌ Krishna is a holy river.

✅ I swam in × Hussain Sagar.
✅ the Krishna is a holy river.

Rivers always take “the”. Lakes (when “Lake” is part of the name) do not. Students mix these up. నదులకు “the” తప్పనిసరి (the Ganga, the Krishna). సరస్సులకు (Hussain Sagar, Lake Victoria) “the” వద్దు.

❌ Error 4 — Omitting “the” before specific/unique things

❌ Sun rises in east.
❌ I visited Taj Mahal.

✅ The sun rises in the east.
✅ I visited the Taj Mahal.

Since Telugu has no articles at all, students sometimes omit “the” even where it’s required — before unique/specific nouns like the sun, the moon, the Taj Mahal. తెలుగులో Articles లేనందుకు, students “the” పెట్టడం మర్చిపోతారు. Sun, Moon, Taj Mahal — ఇవి unique కాబట్టి “the” తప్పనిసరి!
