Rule 1 — When to use Formal vs Informal
The situation (context) decides which style to use. Formal English is used in official, professional, and academic settings. Informal English is for casual, personal interactions.

Rule 2 — Vocabulary Differences (Word Choice)
Formal English uses full, sophisticated words. Informal English uses simpler, shorter, everyday words. Never use slang or colloquial words in formal writing.

Rule 3 — Contractions: Allowed or Not?
Contractions (short forms like don’t, can’t, I’m, it’s) are only used in informal English. In formal writing, always write the full form.

Rule 4 — Greetings, Openings & Closings
How you start and end a letter or email is a key marker of formal vs informal English. The wrong opening in a formal letter can reduce your marks significantly.

Rule 5 — Sentence Structure & Tone
Formal sentences are longer, complete, and polite. They often use passive voice. Informal sentences are shorter, direct, and friendly, and may be incomplete.
