English has two forms for every letter — Capital (Uppercase) and Small (Lowercase). Capital letters are the bigger, taller forms: A B C … and small letters are: a b c …
We use capital letters to signal importance — the start of a sentence, names of people and places, the word “I”, and more. Using them correctly shows proper writing skills.

🇮🇳 తెలుగులో తేడా ఏమిటి?
తెలుగులో పెద్ద/చిన్న అక్షరాల తేడా లేదు — “రాముడు” అని రాసినా, “raamudu” అని రాసినా తేడా లేదు.
కానీ ఆంగ్లంలో ఇది చాలా ముఖ్యమైన నియమం! తప్పుగా రాస్తే అర్థం మారొచ్చు.
ఉదా: “march” అంటే నడచు — “March” అంటే మార్చి నెల! Capital letter తేడా చేస్తుంది!

Rule 1 First word of a Sentence
The sun rises in the east.
She is my teacher.
ప్రతి వాక్యం మొదటి అక్షరం Capital లో రాయాలి. ఫుల్ స్టాప్ (.) తర్వాత కూడా Capital తో మొదలు పెట్టాలి.
Rule 2 Proper Nouns — Names
Ravi lives in Ongole.
Andhra Pradesh is beautiful.
వ్యక్తుల పేర్లు (రవి, సుమ), ఊళ్ళు (Ongole, Delhi), దేశాలు (India) — అన్నీ Capital తో మొదలవుతాయి.
Rule 3 Pronoun ‘I’
I am a student.
My mother and I went to school.
“I” అనే పదం వాక్యంలో ఎక్కడ ఉన్నా — మొదట్లో అయినా, మధ్యలో అయినా — ఎల్లప్పుడూ Capital ‘I’!
Rule 4 Days & Months
Today is Monday.
School reopens in June.
Monday, Tuesday … Sunday మరియు January … December — ఇవన్నీ Proper Nouns, కాబట్టి Capital తో మొదలవుతాయి.
Rule 5 Festivals & Holidays
We celebrate Diwali every year.
Christmas is in December.
పండుగల పేర్లు Proper Nouns — Diwali, Eid, Ugadi, Christmas, Holi — అన్నీ Capital తో రాయాలి.
Rule 6 Titles Before Names
Dr. Sharma is my doctor.
Mr. and Mrs. Raju came home.
Dr., Mr., Mrs., Miss, Prof. — ఈ బిరుదులు పేరు ముందు వస్తే Capital తో మొదలవుతాయి.
Rule 7 First Word of Direct Speech
She said, “Come here.”
He asked, “What is your name?”
ఎవరైనా చెప్పిన మాటను quote చేసేటప్పుడు (” ” లలో), ఆ మాటల మొదటి అక్షరం Capital అవుతుంది.
Rule 8 Languages & Nationalities
I speak Telugu and English.
She is an Indian student.
భాషల పేర్లు (Telugu, Hindi, French) మరియు జాతుల పేర్లు (Indian, American) — ఇవన్నీ Capital తో రాయాలి.

Small Letters — When NOT to Capitalise
Capital వేయకూడని చోట్లు
⚠️ గుర్తుంచుకోండి:
Seasons (రుతువులు), Directions (దిక్కులు), మరియు Common Nouns (సాధారణ పేర్లు) — ఇవి Capital తో రాయకూడదు! చాలా మంది ఇక్కడ తప్పు చేస్తారు.

Seasons (spring, summer, autumn, winter) are NOT proper nouns — no capital! రుతువులు సాధారణ పేర్లు — Capital వేయకూడదు.

✅ Correct
Go to the north.
General directions (north, south, east, west) use small letters. But “North India” (specific name) uses capital! సాధారణ దిక్కులకు small letters. కానీ “North India” లాంటి నిర్దిష్ట పేర్లకు Capital వాడాలి.
❌ Wrong
She is a Teacher.
✅ Correct
She is a teacher.
Common nouns (teacher, doctor, book, river) are NOT capitalised. Only the specific name gets capital: “Dr. Sharma”. సాధారణ నామవాచకాలకు (teacher, book, dog) Capital వేయకూడదు.
❌ Wrong
My Favourite colour is Blue.
✅ Correct
My favourite colour is blue.
Colours, adjectives, and random common words should NOT be capitalised mid-sentence. రంగులు, విశేషణాలు వాక్యం మధ్యలో small letters లో రాయాలి.

Common Errors by Telugu Students
తెలుగు విద్యార్థులు చేసే తప్పులు
❌ Error 1 — Writing ‘i’ instead of ‘I’
my friend and i went to the market.
My friend and I went to the market.
Telugu students forget that “I” is always capitalised — even when it appears in the middle of a sentence.
తెలుగులో ‘నేను’ అని రాసినప్పుడు size తేడా లేదు. కానీ ఆంగ్లంలో “I” ఎల్లప్పుడూ Capital అక్షరంలో రాయాలి!
❌ Error 2 — No capital for proper names

Since Telugu script doesn’t distinguish capital/small, students often forget to capitalise names of people, places, and institutions.
తెలుగు లిపిలో ఈ తేడా లేదు కాబట్టి, ఆంగ్లంలో వ్యక్తుల పేర్లు, స్థలాల పేర్లు Capital తో రాయాలని మర్చిపోతారు.
❌ Error 3 — Capitalising seasons & common nouns
I love Winter and i am a Student.
I love winter and I am a student.
Students sometimes randomly capitalise nouns that seem “important” — like seasons, or words like Teacher, Student, Doctor. Only proper nouns get capitals!
Winter, Student, Teacher — ఇవి common nouns. వాటికి Capital అక్షరాలు అవసరం లేదు. కేవలం Proper Nouns మాత్రమే Capital తో రాయాలి.
❌ Error 4 — Forgetting capital mid-sentence for names
She said that sunday is a holiday and diwali comes in october.
She said that Sunday is a holiday and Diwali comes in October.
Days, months, and festivals need capitals wherever they appear in a sentence — not just at the start!
Sunday, Diwali, October — ఇవి వాక్యం మధ్యలో వచ్చినా Capital తో రాయాలి! Proper Nouns ఎక్కడ వున్నా Capital.
