🇬🇧 Syllable — What is it?

A syllable is a single unit of sound in a word that contains one vowel sound. Every word is made up of one or more syllables. For example, cat has 1 syllable, hap-py has 2, and beau-ti-ful has 3.

A word stress is which syllable you say louder, longer, and higher in a word. Stress can change the meaning of a word! E.g. REcord (noun) vs reCORD (verb).

🇮🇳 తెలుగులో అర్థం

తెలుగులో ప్రతి అక్షరం ఒక syllable లాంటిది. ఆంగ్లంలో syllable అంటే ఒక vowel sound ఉన్న ధ్వని భాగం.

Word Stress అంటే ఒక పదంలో ఒక syllable ని మిగతావాటి కంటే గట్టిగా, నెమ్మదిగా, ఎక్కువ స్వరంతో పలకడం.

తెలుగులో అమ్మ, నాన్న, పుస్తకం — ఇవి syllable ద్వారా విభజింపబడతాయి. ఆంగ్లంలో కూడా అదే నియమం!

Syllables ఎలా విభజించాలి?

VC·CV Rule

When two consonants sit between two vowels, divide between the consonants.

రెండు vowel ల మధ్య రెండు consonants ఉంటే — వాటి మధ్య విభజించాలి. ఉదా: win | ter

V·CV Rule

When one consonant sits between two vowels, divide before the consonant (usually).

రెండు vowel ల మధ్య ఒక్క consonant ఉంటే — ఆ consonant కి ముందు విభజించాలి. ఉదా: o | pen

Prefix / Suffix Rule

Prefixes and suffixes are always their own syllable — divide at the boundary.

un-, re-, dis- వంటి prefixes మరియు -er, -ful, -ness వంటి suffixes ఎల్లప్పుడూ వేరే syllable అవుతాయి.

Common Errors by Telugu Students

తెలుగు విద్యార్థులు చేసే Stress తప్పులు

❌ Error 1 — Equal Stress on All Syllables

❌ Telugu students say:

im-POR-tant (wrong stress)

✅ Correct:

im-POR-tant

Telugu has relatively equal stress across syllables. In English, one syllable must be clearly louder. Practice by exaggerating the stressed syllable first. తెలుగులో అన్ని అక్షరాలు సమానంగా పలుకుతాం. ఆంగ్లంలో ఒక syllable ని గట్టిగా, ఎక్కువ సేపు పలకాలి. “important” లో “POR” బాగా గట్టిగా పలకండి!

❌ Error 2 — Stressing the Wrong Syllable in 2-syllable Nouns

❌ Says:

po-LICE, doc-TOR

✅ Correct:

po-LICE, DOC-tor

Note: police is a verb-like word so 2nd syllable is stressed. Doctor is a noun so 1st is stressed. Remember: most 2-syllable nouns → first syllable stressed. చాలా తెలుగు విద్యార్థులు “doctor” ని “doc-TOR” అంటారు. కానీ సరైనది “DOC-tor”. Noun అయితే మొదటి syllable గట్టిగా పలకాలి!

❌ Error 3 — No Stress Shift Between Noun and Verb

❌ Says both as:

RE-cord for noun AND verb

✅ Correct:

RE-cord (noun) · re-CORD (verb)

Telugu students often use the same stress for both noun and verb forms. Remember: REcord (the music record) vs reCORD (please record this). తెలుగు విద్యార్థులు noun మరియు verb కి ఒకే stress వాడతారు. ఆంగ్లంలో ఇవి మారుతాయి! “record” — noun అయితే RE గట్టిగా, verb అయితే CORD గట్టిగా!
