Defining and non-defining relative clauses

DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE AND NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSE:

A relative clause contains a relative pronoun.

Before we begin, let’s look at ‘clause’ and ‘relative pronoun’.

A clause is a group of words that has a Subject and a Predicate.

Predicate’ is the part of a sentence that makes a statement about the Subject. It contains ‘verb’.

Here’s an example:

The little cat   moved to the corner.

Subject                    Predicate

I saw a man. He was blind.

1. How do you describe Nick’s physical condition/state?

Nick is a torso. / Nick has no arms and legs.

2. ‘but he doesn’t let the details stop him.’ What does this line mean?

It means ‘he doesn’t allow his disability to challenge him’.

3. What does the phrase ‘the details’ mean?

It means Nick’s disability. / It means the fact that Nick was a torso.
