English
In English, each vowel (A, E, I, O, U) can be pronounced in two different ways — as a short vowel sound or a long vowel sound. The same letter produces two different sounds depending on how it is used in a word. For example, the letter A sounds different in cat (short) and cake (long).
Getting vowel sounds right is the key to clear, correct English pronunciation. Mispronouncing a vowel sound can completely change the meaning of a word — bit and bite are very different words!

ఆంగ్లంలో ప్రతి అచ్చుకు రెండు రకాల ధ్వనులు ఉంటాయి: పొట్టి ధ్వని (Short Sound) మరియు పొడవు ధ్వని (Long Sound). అదే అక్షరం వేర్వేరు పదాలలో వేర్వేరుగా పలుకుతారు. ఉదాహరణకు: “cat” లో ‘a’ పొట్టిగా పలుకుతారు, “cake” లో ‘a’ పొడవుగా పలుకుతారు. ఈ తేడా తెలుసుకోవడం సరైన ఉచ్చారణకు చాలా అవసరం. తప్పుగా పలికితే అర్థమే మారిపోతుంది!

Short Vowel Sounds

English
Short vowel sounds are quick and clipped. The mouth opens briefly and the sound is cut short. These sounds are very common in everyday English words.

పొట్టి అచ్చు ధ్వనులు చాలా తక్కువ సేపు పలుకుతారు — నోరు తెరిచి వెంటనే మూసేస్తారు. ఇవి రోజువారీ ఆంగ్ల పదాలలో చాలా సాధారణం.

Long Vowel Sounds
పొడవు అచ్చు ధ్వనులు
English
Long vowel sounds are held slightly longer and often sound like the name of the letter itself. For example, long A sounds like the letter “A” (as you say the alphabet).
Telugu
పొడవు అచ్చు ధ్వనులను కొంచెం ఎక్కువ సేపు పలుకుతారు. ముఖ్యమైన విషయం ఏమిటంటే — పొడవు అచ్చు ధ్వని ఆ అక్షరం పేరు వలె పలుకుతుంది! “A” పొడవుగా పలికితే “ఏ” లాగా వస్తుంది, అది అక్షరమాలలో “A” పేరే!

The Silent ‘e’ at the end of a word says nothing itself — but it reaches back and makes the vowel before it say its own name (long sound).
చివర వచ్చే ‘e’ మాట్లాడడు కానీ దాని ముందు ఉన్న అచ్చును పొడవుగా పలికిస్తుంది. అందుకే దీన్ని “మాయ e” అంటారు!

Common Errors by Telugu Students
తెలుగు విద్యార్థులు చేసే సాధారణ తప్పులు
Error 1 — Pronouncing Short ‘A’ as Long ‘A’
Wrong
Saying “cat” as “kaat” (పొడవుగా పలకడం)
Correct
“cat” = /kæt/ — short, quick sound. The mouth opens wide but the sound is clipped.
తెలుగులో “ఆ” మరియు “అ” మాత్రమే ఉంటాయి. కానీ “cat” లో “a” ఒక వేరే ధ్వని /æ/. దీన్ని “క్యాట్” అని పలకాలి, “కాట్” అని కాదు.
Error 2 — Confusing Short ‘I’ and Long ‘E’
Wrong
Saying “bit” as “beat”, or “sit” as “seat”
Correct
“bit” /bɪt/ is short. “beat” /biːt/ is long. They are different words with different meanings.
తెలుగులో “ఇ” మరియు “ఈ” స్పష్టంగా తెలుసు. ఆంగ్లంలో కూడా /ɪ/ (పొట్టి) మరియు /iː/ (పొడవు) వేర్వేరుగా పలకాలి. “bit” మరియు “beat” వేర్వేరు అర్థాలు!
Error 3 — Ignoring the Silent ‘E’ — Reading as Short Vowel

Reading “hope” as “hop”, or “kite” as “kit” — ignoring the final ‘e’
Correct
When a word ends in silent ‘e’, the vowel before it is long: “hope” = /hoʊp/, “kite” = /kaɪt/.
చివర ఉన్న ‘e’ కనబడినప్పుడు దాన్ని పలకకుండా విడిచిపెట్టి, దానికి ముందు ఉన్న అచ్చును పొడవుగా పలకాలి. “kite” లో చివర ‘e’ మూగది కానీ ‘i’ ని పొడవుగా చేస్తుంది.
